Hall of Fame: The result

All summer long, a panel of Anfield legends have been debating which pair of players from the 2000s deserve to be inducted into the club's official Hall of Fame - and Liverpoolfc.tv can today finally reveal the result

Decorated Kop icons Kenny Dalglish, Brian Hall, Alan Hansen, Phil Thompson and Ian Callaghan kick-started the process earlier this year as they poured over the names of each and every player to have represented the Reds during the decade.

From there, with the help of our statisticians, the distinguished team drew up a shortlist of 21 names to be considered to be forever associated with some of the greatest footballers to have graced the hallowed L4 turf.

Several factors were taken into consideration in deciding upon the names including honours won, number of appearances made, impact and length of service to the club.

Much debate and discussion followed as that list was whittled down to just 10 players and, over the course of an eventful summer in the history of Liverpool Football Club, the quintet carefully dissected the merits of each contender - while actively inviting fans to have their say through the official website and weekly magazine.

Once Dalglish, Hall, Hansen, Thompson and Callaghan had diligently assessed the claims of each of the 10, their task was to narrow that list down even further to just four players.

Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypia and Fernando Torres were the quartet left in the running heading into this week.

Each player presented their own strong case for induction, but Liverpoolfc.tv can confirm it is our Scouse talismen Carragher and Gerrard who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining the likes of Billy Liddell, Roger Hunt, Ray Clemence, John Barnes and Ian Rush on the roll of honour.

Upon hearing the news, an ecstatic Gerrard said: "I'm extremely proud to join the official Hall of Fame. You only have to look through the list of those players who are in there for previous decades to see what an incredible honour it is.

"Past captains such as Emlyn Hughes, Phil Thompson and Graeme Souness all missed out which goes to show the quality of players this club has had down the years.

"With me and Jamie being local lads it makes it all the more special to be the latest additions."

Gerrard's sentiments were echoed by Carragher, who added: "You only have to look at the list of players that haven't made it into the Hall of Fame to appreciate how proud I am to be nominated.

"Players like Graeme Souness, Emlyn Hughes and Robbie Fowler have achieved so much at the club and are unfortunate not to be on there.

"Me and Stevie have obviously been at Liverpool for the whole of the decade and all of our careers so I'd imagine that came into the selectors' considerations.

"Sami Hyypia is unlucky to miss out because he contributed so much to Liverpool in his time here and conducted himself with dignity throughout while also winning everything bar the Premier League, like me."

Dalglish admitted he was satisfied with the panel's work and insisted the pair are well worthy of being inducted into the club's Hall of Fame to stand alongside some of Anfield's greatest legends.

"Steven's been our best player overall throughout the decade and Jamie the best defender," he said.

"The most important thing about them is the way they have been brought up and that makes it very easy for them to identify with the fans. They have never forgotten where they've come from.

"They are still friends with the guys they grew up with. It never goes amiss when players can relate to the fans and appreciate the support they get from them."

Thompson added: "Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher could have got in any of the teams we played in and that's testament to them. They are legends and icons in the history of this football club and that is absolutely huge."

Take Two

ua licimuri, a bravo bratu Stevi i bratu Karadzhi. drink.gif
